Mobilio hasn’t gotten the attention of Honda yet. Low MPV cars that once sold tens of thousands of units never received a refresher. Now Honda emphasizes that it only focuses on 7-passenger cars in the SUV segment.
“For seven passengers, we focus on LSUV,” replied Yusak Billy as Sales Marketing & Business Innovation Director of PT Honda Prospect Motor in Depok, West Java, Monday (26/7/2023).
Since it was first launched in 2014, the second generation of Mobilio, which is marketed in Indonesia, has experienced touch changes to the lights and body. Changes to the Honda Mobilio occurred in 2017 and 2019. However, sales figures have continued to decline from year to year.
Even though at the launch in 2014, sales had skyrocketed to 79,288 units. Now, from January to May 2023, only 782 Honda Mobilio units have been distributed.
PT Honda Prospect Motor only sells one type of Honda Mobilio, namely the SM/T type. The price is Rp. 235.9 million. This model is maintained in production because the demand comes from the fleet.
Billy said the SUV car segment is currently on the rise. Honda will focus on cars in the 7-passenger segment through the Honda BR-V, according to the character and conditions of Indonesian roads.
“For the 7-passenger we focus on the LSUV, because the ground clearance is higher and fits more people,” said Billy.
It’s quite interesting to see Mobilio in Indonesia, because many car products in the low MPV segment have been refreshed, from the All New Toyota Avanza, All New Daihatsu Xenia, New Mitsubishi Xpander, to the All New Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid.
Honda had the same platform for use in different types of cars, such as the BR-V and Mobilio, before the 7-passenger LSUV entered the second generation.
On the other hand, the platform currently used by the BR-V can adopt hybrid technology. Is it possible that Mobilio will immediately be injected with a hybrid? like other manufacturers who will market hybrid cars on LMPV cars, or is Mobilio’s fate stopped without updates?
