The number of fashion stores in our country has fallen by 10 percent since the corona crisis. The hardest blows have fallen at shoe stores, women’s fashion and children’s clothing.

Online is a major competitor, but the growth of total spending on clothing is leveling off overall, according to figures from ABN AMRO.

The mandatory closure of stores during the corona pandemic and the explosive growth of online has accelerated the decline in the number of physical stores. Also because of the war in Ukraine, the high inflation and significant cost increases, more shops ran into problems.

In the period January 2020 to August 2023, the number of clothing stores decreased by almost 10 percent. In 2020 and 2021 in particular, the decline was greater than in previous years, at 4.3 percent and 4.9 percent respectively.

An exception to the decline is the sharp increase in second-hand clothing stores of almost 11 percent in the same period. Since January 1, 2010, the number of two-hand shops has even increased by 55 percent to 669 stores in August.

The decline in the number of physical fashion stores has been going on for years. Since 2010, almost a third have disappeared. For example, the number of stores in children’s fashion (-60 percent) and in shoes (-42 percent) has fallen sharply since then.
