With the rise of streaming, less than half of television usage is for cable or over-the-air TV. This was the conclusion of a study conducted by Nielsen in United States.
About two years ago, the consultancy started using a new metric to measure how much time people spend watching their TV. This was divided into Air TV, cable TV, streaming and others (which includes consoles of video game and other types of media).
The latest report indicates that cable usage fell 12.5% since June of last yearbecoming less than 30% and air TV fell to 20%, in homes in the United States. Between June and July 2023 alone, air and cable fell 1% while streaming and others recovered that 1%.

The most and least watched television according to Nielsen
A series of new original shows hit streaming platforms in July, including The Witcher y The Lincoln Lawyer en Netflix, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan en Prime Video y The Bear en Hulu, but the contents acquired were the most viewed of the month. Suits, en streaming en Netflix y Peacock, y Bluey en Disney+ were the most watched programs in July, with 23,000 million minutes of viewing. Suits, however, set a new audience record for an acquired title, racking up nearly 18 billion minutes.
Compared, free-to-air sports generated nearly 25 billion viewing minutes in July, albeit on a wide range of channels. Most would consider July a slow month for sports, as viewership for free-to-air sports typically more than triples in early September. Although the FIFA Women’s World Cup provided a boost at the end of the month, fiction remained the most watched category, with 25.7% of the audience. Overall, the total audience for broadcasts fell by 3.6% to end the month with 20% for television, which represents a new low. In year-on-year terms, television consumption fell by 5.4%.
