The decline in sales in stores almost stopped in May

“Sales of fuels and food sales decreased, while sales of non-food goods increased by 2.6 percent year on year. Higher sales were recorded mainly by sales via the Internet and also by sales of household products, “said Marie Boušková, Director of the CZSO Services Statistics Department.

Revenues from e-shops and mail order services grew by 33.6 percent year-on-year. Household stores increased sales by 15.2 percent. Sales in non-specialized stores with food predominating increased by 0.2 percent, while sales in specialized food stores decreased by 29.2 percent.

The decline in gastronomy and tourism continues

However, ING Bank’s chief economist Jakub Seidler points out that stopping the decline in sales does not apply to services. “While retail sales came as a surprise, sales in services in May remained in the double-digit year-on-year decline and many industries had sales halved than a year ago,” he said.

“In accommodation, the year-on-year decline in sales eased from -86 percent to -62 percent in April, in catering from -54 percent to -42 percent, in travel agency activities from -98 to -73. Overall, sales in services fell by 21 percent year on year in May, the same as in April, “said Seidler.
