Our confidence in politics was at its lowest level in ten years last year. About 25 percent of the Dutch over the age of fifteen had confidence in the House of Representatives, and only 21 percent in politicians in general.
Confidence in politicians is therefore unprecedentedly low, according to figures from the statistics office CBS, which has been investigating this since 2012. At the start of the corona pandemic, that percentage was still 58 percent, but since 2020 it has fallen sharply.
Other political institutions such as the European Union and the city council are also losing confidence. About half of the people think that these institutions do their job well.
Our trust in our fellow human beings is better: 66 percent of people say they have this. In addition, about 80 percent believe that judges, police and health care do honest work.
There is a difference in confidence between people with different levels of education. Low-educated people have less confidence in people around them, namely about 40 percent. This percentage is more than twice as high among highly educated people.
Last February, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) discovered that confidence in politics was falling due to factors such as high inflation and rising energy bills. People who are bothered by the high prices when doing their daily shopping have the least confidence in politics. Confidence in banks was just below 50 percent in 2020, Statistics Netherlands reports.
