The Riga City Election Commission today decided to approve the results of the council’s extraordinary elections, after on Thursday the votes from three polling stations previously declared invalid were added to the total results.
LETA has already reported that the Riga City Council elections took place on August 29 this year. Following the discovery of problems with the correct sealing of ballot envelopes in three polling stations, four political forces appealed against the election results.
On Thursday, on the basis of the judgments of the Administrative Regional Court, the votes of the bulletins placed in the previously declared invalid envelopes were counted at the Riga Congress House.
The inclusion of ballot papers placed in unstamped and incorrectly stamped ballot envelopes in three polling stations did not affect the preliminary composition of the newly elected Riga City Council, Laura Zaharova, a representative of the Central Election Commission, confirmed to LETA.
Consequently, after the opening of 661 previously declared invalid envelopes and the counting of ballot papers therein, neither the distribution of seats obtained by parties in the Riga City Council nor the deputies elected in the municipality changed, only the voter support obtained for some lists changed by one hundredth of a percentage point.
“Development / For!” Has won the most votes in the Riga City Council’s extraordinary elections and the “Progressive” (APP) joint list, followed by “Harmony” and “New Unity”.
Seven political forces have joined the Riga City Council. The APP list will be under the mandates of 18 deputies, “Harmony” will get 12 councilors’ seats, “New Unity” – ten, the National Union and the Association of Latvian Regions – seven, “Honor to serve Riga” five, but the Latvian Russian Union and the New Conservative Party – four seats each.
