the decision is going to be a balance between risk and benefit

More than 20 professionals, who make up the Vaccine Commission and the ad hoc group, discuss the issue every day, said Julio Medina, director of the chair of Infectology at the University of the Republic, who is part of that team.

“First, we have to see that there is approval of vaccines at the level of international organizations, add more evidence and discuss especially with pediatricians,” said the infectologist.

“Always, the decision is going to be a balance between risk and benefit,” he emphasized. “When the benefit is greater than the risk, the step is taken, when the benefit and the risk is still doubtful, you have a pause and continue studying,” he said.

“Uruguay has always been very proactive, for something we have the results that we have. If the time comes to take the step, to vaccinate children under 12 years of age, it will be done, but that decision has not yet been made, ”Medina stressed.

In turn, the vaccine advisory body is now considering enabling third doses in other age groups that were immunized with doses of Pfizer.
