The decision by Del Potro and Sabatini that surprised the tennis world

It has been confirmed that the former Argentine tennis players will be paired up for an unofficial match at Flushing Meadows against Venus Williams and Andy Roddick. How does that go?

Del Potro’s participation in the Roland Garros Junior

Great news for Argentine tennis fans has been confirmed. Juan Martín del Potro and Gabriela Sabatini, two legends of the national sport, will play an exhibition match together during the US Open, which starts in ten days. It will be a mixed doubles match against two historic American players: Venus Williams and Andy Roddick.

The last Grand Slam of the season will begin on August 26 and will feature a new battle in the men’s draw between the best tennis players of the moment. At the same time, the organization of the tournament that takes place in Flushing Meadows Park has already arranged an exhibition match that will steal all the attention: Juan Martín del Potro and Gabriela Sabatini against Andy Roddick and Venus Williams.

This was confirmed on his X account by journalist Ben Rothenberg and the excitement of the fans was not long in coming. Sabatini already knows what this move is like, because together with Gisela Dulko she played the Roland Garros Legends Tournament more than once. Now Delpo joins, who has not played since his retirement at the Argentina Open 2022 and his last announcement had been that he will open a tennis academy in Florida, USA, in September.

On the other side will be two former leaders of the ATP and WTA rankings. Roddick won the North American Grand Slam in 2003 and hung up his racket in the 2012 edition just after falling in the fourth round against Torre de Tandil. For her part, the eldest Williams sister is 44 years old and, although she has not announced her retirement, she has not played professionally since March.

The presence of Del Potro and Sabatini, winners of the US Open in 2009 and 1990 respectively, was already confirmed. They will be there for Fan Week, a week dedicated to tennis fans that will take place from August 19 to 25 in New York. During that period, various experiences will be offered to fans, including open practices and events with active tennis players. The exhibition, which awaits a confirmed date, will be the icing on the cake.
