When Ewout is in the police car with the officers, they receive a report that instantly makes your necks stand on end. Someone hasn’t been seen for three weeks and there are flies in front of his windows. “Flies is not a good sign, is it?” Ewout asks the police. “No, certainly not,” replies one of them. “We pay attention to these types of reports, because 9 times out of 10 it is a deceased person in the house. You recognize that pungent smell immediately.”
When Ewout and the cops find themselves in front of the house, he has to swallow hard. “I think it’s a bit of a creepy moment because you know you’re going to see something that’s not pleasant.” When they approach the house, you can really see that the window is full of flies. And not only that, there’s also a strange smell in the house. “There’s a very pungent smell coming your way,” notes one of the officers. He describes it as “moldy bread that has been sitting in the sun for a long time”. The agents therefore have no doubts about what they will find inside. “That’s really the decomposition process you’re feeling. You can reasonably assume the person inside has been dead for some time.”
When they break down the residence door and enter, however, he is in for a big surprise. The resident is alive and well in the house. “It’s concerning if the corpse smell comes from under your door when you’re still alive,” notes Ewout. “We find Mr. in good health,” says one of the agents. “Only last year’s food leftovers are still here. The lord needs help, that much is clear. Inside are sacks full of food.”
While they are happy that the man is still alive, they are worried about him. They then hook him up with a neighborhood team. The coaches of this team help the man to make his house livable again and also put him in touch with the right help.
