On Thursday evening, the stage was again set for “The Debate” with Fredrik Solvang on NRK. The evening’s theme was the working conditions of doctors in the public health system.
Stig Amundrud was in the studio. Her boyfriend and fiance Maiken Schultz took her own life this year. He says that she was burnt out by her work duties.
– She was open that it was very tough. But I don’t think she was ever able to open up about how tough it was. I don’t think she realized how ill she was about to become, says Amundrud.

– It’s a miracle that more people don’t get sick
Doctor and initiator of the “#Legermåleve” campaign Ida Marie Ringerud emphasizes that this is not an isolated case.
– What Stig describes here sounds absolutely extreme. But this is an everyday life that many doctors recognize. It’s really a miracle that more people don’t get sick, says Ringerud.

– Is it a good use of medical resources?
Doctor at the Hospital in Vestfold, Andreas Aass-Engstrøm, emphasizes that he wants to spend more of his time treating patients, and less on administrative tasks.
– In the middle of the night, I have to send a fax to Oslo if a patient comes in with a heart attack at the hospital in Vestfold. There are our IT systems. I have to send a good old fashioned fax. I stand there arguing with the fax machine. Is it a good use of medical resources? asks Aass-Engstrøm rhetorically.
– I think the population might be a little surprised
CEO Bjørn Bjørnbeth at Oslo University Hospital agrees that the healthcare system lags a little behind technically:
– When it comes to ICT, I think the population in general might be a little surprised that we haven’t come further. The fax machine is there, confirms Bjørnbeth.
Bjørnbeth also emphasizes that one of the tasks managers in the public healthcare system have is to operate responsibly.
– We must work well and systematically with this. The problems we hear about are not found everywhere. They are found in a number of places, and obviously too many places, he says.
– Threatens the idea of public healthcare
Doctors of the future were also discussed.
– Young doctors apply to the hospitals to a lesser extent. Precisely because the working conditions and the number of tasks we have to do on duty have increased dramatically. This is worrying. I think this potentially threatens the whole idea that the best professionals should be in the public healthcare system, regardless of pocketbook, says Aass-Engstrøm.
– We see all over the country that we lack LIS 2 and 3 who apply for these positions. They are the ones who will train to become specialized.
They will become, for example, cardiologists or nephrologists, he elaborates.
– That is where it is now failing. That means those who are left are whipped even harder. We must maintain a 24-hour emergency service. When this meets today’s pressured economic situation, we feel that the working environment and education are not prioritized, he says.
– We have come to grips
Health Minister Kjerkol says that they have increased the number of LIS positions.
– There will not be a place for everyone who applies. But that is an increase of 66 more than what the Norwegian Directorate of Health has given us as an annual recommendation. We have tackled the recruitment and personnel challenges from day one, says Kjerkol.
She emphasizes that it is important to take care of the experienced doctors, who will also lead the doctors of the future. She is also aware that the healthcare system must be updated:
– We need to stop sending faxes, says Kjerkol.
