THE DEBATE. Should a politician be able to participate in a program like ‘The Masked Singer’? This is your opinion | Inland

Vooruit chairman Conner Rousseau has made it to the final of the popular VTM program ‘The Masked Singer’. The politician returned home on Friday with a bronze medal and a lot of reactions. Some praise Rousseau’s voice, others think that a (good) politician does not belong in an entertainment program. Earlier today we let our experts speak. Now it’s your turn.

Chantal Geerts: Bart Tommelein also took part in the program last year. Everyone does whatever they want in their spare time, regardless of whether you’re in politics or working elsewhere. By the way, this program was shot during the summer last year. Then there was no energy crisis, nor the war in Ukraine.”

Paul Boutsen: “If it didn’t correlate with his highly paid position as a politician, I wouldn’t have a problem with it. But if you – as part of a government – have to make decisions to literally have the light on in Flemish homes, and you don’t give home because you have recordings, then you are not worthy of being a politician and certainly not a ‘singer’.”

Politics should reflect society. Sometimes seriousness is called for and sometimes the reins have to be released.

Cindy Vanelderen: Politics should reflect society. Sometimes seriousness is called for and sometimes the reins have to be released. Being human among people. A man or woman among the people. Conner understood that very well. Hopefully others will crawl out of their ivory towers now.”

If politicians get involved in this, one can still wonder how much they are actually still involved with content.

Guy Verstraeten

Guy Verstraeten: “Performances like these naturally increase brand awareness, but also further degrade the seriousness of politics. If politicians get involved in this, one can still wonder how much they are actually still involved with content. Rousseau already gives the impression that he is more concerned with packaging than with content. Politics is the big loser and therefore also the citizen, including he/she who looks on with applause.”

Diane Van Riet: “Whether it was Conner in that bunny suit or someone else, I’ll be the worst. To me this is pure entertainment. And although I thought Conner can sing well, I’m not going to vote for his party. In other words: I have enjoyed his participation, but that is not going to make me change political party.”

Marco Di Scarpa: “Ah, it must be possible. After all, we live in 2022 and such programs are part of our lives. So live and let live.”

Christine Leclercq: “Each bird sings as it is beaked. Some politicians gain fame and respect for their sharp insights, ethical leadership, thorough knowledge of the files and maturity. Others sing, dressed as a rabbit. To each his own. ‘The Masked Singer’ is a popular program. More people watch ‘TMS’ than actually know Conner Rousseau as a politician. Smart move to generate extra awareness.”

Carlo Blanckaert: “Politicians who try to gain even more fame and popularity through popular programs are not a good investment for our politics and economy. Isn’t it time to change not only the world economy, but also world politics? Let’s make sure that we only get competent politicians to power instead of the ashes which will give us even more headaches in the future…”
