The Debate Over the Four-Day Working Week: German Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s Stand

German Finance Minister Christian Lindner does not like a four-day working week with a full-time salary. “Never in history has a society increased its prosperity by working less,” says the minister.

The four-day working week has gained popularity since the corona pandemic. Staff schedules were turned upside down and people were looking for ways to improve employee productivity and job satisfaction.

Trials at companies have shown that shorter work weeks can lead to less stress and anxiety among employees, while increasing their efficiency. Corporate profits can therefore increase due to shorter working weeks.

About fifty companies in Germany plan to participate in such a six-month trial from February. Lindner expects little from the tests: “The key to our prosperity remains hard work.”
