In contrast to many other gaming genres, the fighting genre can be said to be one of the few genres that not only has a high tolerance for paid DLC, but also welcomes it with open arms. The release of a fighter pack that can be offered in several seasons, for example, is actually seen as consistent support from developers to ensure a competitive atmosphere that continues to exist in the long term. A similar strategy was also carried out by Netherrealm Studios with their newest fighting game – Mortal Kombat 1. However, it turns out that not all of these microtransactions received a positive response from gamers.
Netherrealm Studios has just injected a Fatality with a “season” theme, namely Halloween. The bad news? Instead of giving it away for free, they sell this unique Fatality behind the walls of the Premium Store at a price of around 1,200 Dragon Krystals, where for 1 pack of 1,240 Krystals they sell it at a price of around 150 thousand Rupiah. Netherrealm’s decision immediately sparked criticism and anger in the community who saw it as a money-making strategy. This criticism was also followed by calls for a boycott not to buy it in various existing communities.
This Halloween themed fatality is sold for 1,200 Dragon Krystals or the equivalent of 150 thousand Rupiah.
Considering that this is a “Season” themed Fatality, it is not impossible that Netherrealm will release more paid Fatalities like this in the future as a strategy to attract more money. What do you think? Rational or mercenary?
