The story of a brilliant detective who easily unravels any crime is known throughout the world. Many investigators dream of learning the deduction and insight of Sherlock Holmes. This image has become canonical, as well as the character of his assistant – Dr. Watson, an awkward and charming man, a loyal friend.
However, many believe that this plot could have done without such a hero. Netizens cite as an example an investigation related to the Hound of the Baskervilles. Watson did not play a special role there, he only collected information from local residents and processed it quite literary.
Critics came to the conclusion that Holmes himself could have found out the necessary data. And therefore his assistant doctor looks unconvincing and downright useless in all other investigations.
True, there were also defenders of the modest Watson. In their opinion, he is needed primarily as a biographer of Holmes, through whom the detective’s personality becomes clearer. Zen Channel reports this “Homo ludens”.
