The Central Mediterranean route between Libya and Italy is the deadliest, with 741 deaths since the beginning of the year.
The number of illegal migrants who died in the first half of 2021 on sea routes to Europe more than doubled compared to the same period last year. On Wednesday, July 14, reports Anadolu with reference to the report of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
So, for six months at least 1,146 migrants drowned. At the same time, the number of illegal immigrants using the sea route to Europe increased by 56%.
The Central Mediterranean route between Libya and Italy is the deadliest, with 741 deaths since the beginning of the year. At least 250 more people died in the Atlantic Ocean en route between West Africa and the Canary Islands, at least 149 in the western Mediterranean en route to Spain, and at least 6 in the eastern Mediterranean en route to Greece.
The real death toll on sea routes to Europe could have been much higher, the IOM said.
