The death toll of 25 after the winter storm hit the county near New York

The budget of the severe winter storm hitting the UNITED STATES for several days it has reached the 25 death mark in Erie County alone, located in the western part of the state of New York and one of the hardest hit, a local official said on Monday.

Local services have confirmed new deaths since Sunday evening, of people found in cars or outside, “bringing the total deaths from the blizzard to 25”, Mark Poloncarz, county manager, said at a press conference.

Thousands of houses without electricity

A travel ban was still in place on Monday morning in part of this region. Power has been restored to more than 13,000 homes in the past 24 hours, Mark Poloncarz said, but more than 12,000 are still without power. Some will not be able to connect to the network until Tuesday.

Since Wednesday evening, the United States has been hit by this storm of rare intensity, whose polar winds have caused heavy snowfall, especially in the Great Lakes region.

Tens of millions of Americans saw their Christmas weekend upended by massive power outages, impassable roads and thousands of canceled flights, wreaking havoc at airports.

The total of deaths confirmed by authorities in nine US states is now at least 47 dead.
