The death toll from floods in Brazil rises to 144 – 2024-05-14 00:08:21

While authorities predict new storms for the southern region of Brazil, the most recent report from the Civil Defense indicates that the floods caused by torrential rains left 144 dead and more than 2.1 million affected.

With respect to the figures published yesterday, this Sunday there were seven fatalities and 125 people remain missing. For their part, the displaced number 620 thousand and, of those, more than 81 thousand take refuge in shelters improvised by the Government.

The state of Río Grande del Sur, bordering Argentina and Uruguay, is the most affected area. More than 800 injuries have been reported there and 90 percent of its territory has been damaged.

This Sunday, the National Disaster Surveillance and Alert Center (CEMADEN) issued a high-risk alert for landslides in Río Grande do Sul and in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The entity predicts downpours, strong winds and low temperatures until next Tuesday.

Given the weather forecasts, almost the entire state remains on high alert. Search and rescue forces take advantage of the intervals between storms to carry out their work.
