Every year, the Dead Sea shrinks by one meter, leaving behind craters up to 10 meters. Without water, the earth is sinking, BNT reported. One of the reasons is that for years Israelis, Palestinians and Jordanians divert river waters from one of the saltiest reservoirs on Earth, informs BNT.
The activities of chemical companies and climate change also contribute to evaporation.
“According to scientists, the process cannot be stopped for the next 100 years. This will continue no matter what we do,” said Eran Halfi, a hydrogeologist.
Jordan has abandoned an ambitious plan to build a canal to “pour” water from the Red Sea into the Dead Sea, and instead Amman will build a desalination system to provide drinking water.
Environmentalists believe that this is nature’s revenge for harmful human activity, and efforts should be focused on finding solutions to stabilize the Dead Sea.
