The Daytona SP3 has the most powerful engine in Ferrari’s road history

Have you wondered why Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 have “SP” in their names? It was not because of the number of seats, but because they were the first two cars in the Icona series. The third has been revealed right now – it’s Daytona SP3. So again it is called the same as the race track and again it is called “SP”.

But the name is not a reference to this Florida racing circuit. It is more reminiscent of the brand’s famous success at the 24-hour in Daytona in 1967, when Ferrari cars reached all three podiums. These were the 330 P3 / 4, 330 P4 and 412 P models.

The designers took inspiration from historic Ferrari race cars – in addition to the mentioned 350 Can-Am or 512 S. The result is a car without active aerodynamic elements, but also one that is the most aerodynamically efficient in history.

There are a huge number of vents and ailerons. Even at least two canals lead through incredibly thick doors. One is visible and obviously in charge of the air flow, the other is hidden and leads the air to the radiators in front of the rear wheels.

Take it for granted that the door is wing. And speaking of historic cars – the headlights have covers that slide partially into the body. In other words, Ferrari returns, at least in a hint, to the “blinkers” it last mounted on its car on the 456M in 2003.

The taillights are also a bit unorthodox on Ferrari. Forget about one or two pairs of circles, there is one line at the back. It copies the design of the rest of the back, formed by many partitions. The stern is perhaps the most distinctive design element of the car and quite possibly the most controversial.

The interior is dominated by blue seats, which are not seats in the true sense of the word – it is the upholstery glued in the right places, which forms the technical basis of the car. The steering wheel and pedals are adjustable, and most of the car’s infotainment functions are controlled by the driver on the steering wheel using touch buttons. Do not look for the touch screen here, everything is shown in the display in the place of the instrument panel.

According to the press release, the position behind the wheel is very similar to that in Formula 1. And thanks to that, the height of the car is only 1142 mm. The monocoque is made of carbon and Kevlar and the weight distribution is 44:56 on the front: rear axle.

However, the total weight is not so impressive – the so-called dry weight of 1485 kg, ie without operating charges and the driver, means an estimated over 1.6 tons of curb weight. Daytona is not that big, it is less than 4.7 meters long and 205 cm wide.

Behind the cabin works an atmospheric twelve-cylinder marked F140HC. It has less than 6.5 liters in volume, using 98 octane gasoline gives 840 horsepower at 9250 rpm and 697 Nm at 7250 rpm. This makes it the most powerful engine in Ferrari’s history.

It is an engine from the 812 Competizione, but modified for higher performance and lower emissions – up to 30% for pollutants and particulate matter. It has titanium connecting rods, a Formula 1 valve opening system, continuously variable intake manifold lengths for optimum torque over a wide speed range and two spark plugs per cylinder.

Through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an electronically controlled self-locking differential, it drives the rear wheels to a hundred in 2.85 s and a two-stroke in 7.4 s. The top speed should be higher than 340 km / h.

The Daytona will be in 599 units and will be allowed on roads around the world, unlike the Monza SP1 and SP2 models, which lack a windshield. It costs two million euros (50.75 million crowns) including taxes.

But don’t rush to write a check – all the pieces already have their owners. The carmaker introduced the car to them at a private event a few days before the public, and the owners of the SP1 and SP2 models were given priority among those interested.
