Wednesday, June 29, 2022, became the shortest day in the history of measuring the speed of rotation of the planet Earth. The day was 1.59 milliseconds shorter than the usual 24 hours.
The International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) makes very accurate measurements of the Earth’s rotation, not just because of corrections for satellite navigation systems. On June 29, the record for the shortest day was set, the newspaper reported The Guardian.
Days usually have 24 hours. However, the last Wednesday in June was 1.59 milliseconds shorter. This day did not last 86,400 seconds, but only 86,399.841 seconds. It was the shortest day in the history of accurate measurement of the length of the day, which has been carried out since the 1970s.
The trend of shortening days is long-term. According to the portal The Sun scientists have had to add 27 leap seconds over the past 50 years to keep global time. Some of them believe that the acceleration of the rotation may be related to the so-called Chandler period. This is the slight deviation that the Earth’s surface exhibits as it rotates around its axis.
IERS measurements suggest record short days are on the rise. So it’s possible that Wednesday, June 29, won’t hold its record for too long.
