The day the virus reached 6 million people

The pandemic caused by the new coronavirus has already infected more than six million people worldwide, two thirds of which in Europe and the United States, according to an AFP report, at 20:15 GMT today.

According to data collected by the French news agency, at 20:15 GMT (21:15 in Lisbon) today 6,000,867 cases of contamination have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the epidemic began last December, in Chinese province of Wuhan.

At least 366,848 deaths were recorded, particularly in Europe, the continent most affected with 2,135,170 cases (177,595 deaths) and in the United States.

Confirmed cases of covid-19 in the United States today rose to 1,759,725, reaching 103,389 deaths, according to an independent count from John Hopkins University.

The state of New York remains the great epicenter of the pandemic in the United States, with 369,660 confirmed cases, a number just below that of Russia and Brazil.

In New York, 29,710 people died of the new coronavirus, followed by the neighboring state of New Jersey, with 159,608 confirmed cases and 11,634 deaths; Massachusetts, with 95,512 infections and 6,718 deaths and Pennsylvania, which recorded 75,697 positive cases of coronavirus and 5,537 deaths.

Other states with a large number of deaths include Michigan with 5,406, Illinois with 5,270, California with 4,088 and Connecticut with 3,868.

The death toll is close to initial White House estimates, which projected, at best, between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths, but it has already far exceeded the estimates made later by President Donald Trump and which pointed to 50,000 to 60,000 deaths.

Since then, however, Trump has changed his prediction several times until he acknowledged in his most recent estimate that the final number is likely to be between 100,000 and 110,000 deaths.

The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) at the University of Washington, whose pandemic prediction models the White House frequently analyzes, estimates that in early August, covid-19 will have left more than 131,000 dead in the United States.

Three days ago, the United States became the first nation in the world to exceed 100,000 deaths from coronavirus, but a study published today by the prestigious Yale University and the “The Washington Post” indicates that this number may have been exceeded weeks ago .
