The Day of Mikhail Shufutinsky: The Legacy of the ‘Third of September’ Hit Song

Failed to get rich.

Very soon, Russia will celebrate a comic holiday – the Day of Mikhail Shufutinsky. A few years ago, the chansonnier performed the hit “Third of September”, and now this day has become special for Russians.

The hit is performed by all and sundry, however, Shufutinsky is forced to share the lion’s share of the income from the song with the authors of the composition Igor Krutoy and Igor Nikolaev. If not for this, then Mikhail Zakharovich would have long ago become a millionaire and lived happily ever after.

The lyrical composition did not become popular immediately. The song was released in the early 90s and was received quite warmly, but it never occurred to anyone to make a cult out of it.

“Then suddenly, 15 years later, it started. And this madness continues to this day. I’m not really complaining, I like it,” – the chansonnier frankly admitted on the YouTube show “Alena, damn it!”.

According to Igor Nikolaev, the date was chosen at random and is not connected with any personal history. But now the third of September itself has become historical thanks to the hit.
