New York declares a monkeypox emergency

About a quarter of all cases of monkeypox recorded in the United States to date fall on the State of New York. Its governor Kathy Hochul is now declaring a state of emergency: “This measure allows us to react more quickly to the outbreak and take additional steps to vaccinate more New Yorkers.” Contact tracing and testing capacities are to be expanded. More health workers are also being mobilized to administer vaccinations, says Hochul. So far, 1,383 infections with the monkeypox virus have been confirmed in the state of New York, most of them in the metropolis of New York. The state of emergency is valid for four weeks.
