New York builds homeless shelter in luxury residential area

New York – Melting Pot once again lives up to its subtitle: A homeless shelter can be built in the middle of a luxury residential area. The City of New York is allowed to implement this project after several years of legal dispute. The accommodation for around 150 homeless people in the area of the so-called “Billionaire’s Row” (row of billionaires) in Manhattan should be allowed, ruled an appeals court. Residents of the noble quarter had sued against the project. A homeless shelter in their area is a “security risk,” they argued. The appellate court has now rejected this.
The homeless shelter is to be built in the former Park Savoy Hotel near the famous Central Park. Numerous celebrities live in the area around West 58th Street in Manhattan, which is characterized by luxurious skyscrapers. According to plans by the New York government, the planned homeless shelter will provide accommodation for people who are gainfully employed or actively looking for work. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced the plan in 2018. Since the beginning of the corona pandemic, the problem of homelessness in New York has worsened.
