LEONARDO MAYER announced his retirement from professional tennis on Thursday. The Corrientes hung up the racket at 34 years old and after almost 400 games on the top circuit, two ATP titles and, above all, a leading role in the historic 2016 Davis Cup conquest.
“I feel like it’s time to close this wonderful chapter as a player”, published the Yacaré in its official social networks, whose biography says very clearly and in capital letters: DAVIS CUP CHAMPION 2016.
Before that feat at Davis, however, Mayer was the protagonist of a game that caused him pain but, in the end, showed him that he could measure up to the best. At the 2014 Shanghai Masters 1000, in the second round, the Corrientes faced for the first time against Roger Federer and had him on the ropes.
He had five match points, no less, but fell 7-5, 3-6 and 7-6 (7) in an incredible match. In the greeting on the net the Argentine let out a few tears for the chance that he had just escaped, although over time he valued that match for having verified that he could compete with the best.
“As he is my idol, I wanted to beat him to stay in history but it didn’t happen. Roger had some luck with that ball that hit the belt and it didn’t happen. Now it hurts but later it will be one more game”Mayer said at the time.
