Illegal deforestation: Lidl bans beef from Brazil

Several European supermarket chains are removing Brazilian beef products, which are linked to the deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, from their range. The US activist group Mighty Earth announced that the products such as corned beef and dried meat were suspected of having been raised in the Amazon and Pantanal wetlands.

  • They are supposed to disappear from the shelves of Carrefour and Delhaize in Belgium, Auchan in France, Lidl and Albert Heijn in the Netherlands and Sainsbury’s and Princes in Great Britain.
  • Research by Mighty Earth together with the Brazilian organization Repórter Brasil had previously linked the production facilities of the Brazilian meat companies JBS, Marfrig and Minerva with illegal deforestation.
  • JBS denied the allegations. The company shows “zero tolerance” for illegal deforestation.
