China recorded this Wednesday 15 new cases of Covid-19 infection, the lowest number since the daily count started, in January. In contrast, other countries, particularly in Europe, are beginning to deal with new outbreaks. In Portugal, on the same day, 18 patients were confirmed.
One of the priorities of the Chinese authorities is now “protect themselves against imports” from infections from other countries, as Italy, Iran or South Korea deal with a rapid increase in the number of infected people. Everything indicates that the peak of the pandemic has been passed.
This Thursday, there are 78 infected by the new coronavirusin Portugal, with 133 people awaiting laboratory results. There are still 4923 citizens under surveillance by health authorities. Worldwide, the cases already exceed 127 thousand, of which 68 335 are cured.
Covid-19 is “practically contained” in Wuahn
“The first results were obtained, stabilizing the situation and changing the trend in Wuhan and Hubei”, this Tuesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping. After the hundreds of infected people registered daily, China managed to reduce the contamination to less than twenty cases.
Since the end of January, the Chinese province of Hubei has been quarantined. But as of this week, the authorities have announced that most people who are not infected and have not been in contact with the sick can now travel within their province. The partial easing of the confinement does not affect the city of Wuhan. Thus, in principle, the 56 million inhabitants of Hubei, where the new coronavirus was detected in late 2019, cannot leave the province, the local government said.
Even so, in Wuhan, several signs point to normalization. The 16 field hospitals have been closed, airport staff have returned to work, and the number of new daily cases has been falling for several weeks.
DGS recommendations
To prevent the epidemic from spreading, DGS reinforces prevention advice: avoid close contact with people who show signs of acute respiratory infection, wash your hands frequently, avoid contact with animals, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough and then wash your hands for at least 20 seconds. For the school community can be found more information here.
If you have symptoms coinciding with those of the virus (fever, cough, difficulty breathing), the health authority asks you not to go to the emergency room, but to call the SNS 24 line (808 24 24 24). According to the latest newsletter, coughing is the most frequent symptom (65%) among confirmed cases, followed by fever (46%), muscle pain (40%), headache (37%), generalized weakness (24%) and, finally, breathing difficulties (10%).
