Elon Musk is the richest person in the world, has extraordinary success leading companies like SpaceX, Tesla, and even trying to fix Twitter. However, success does have a price, including in terms of temperament.
In a Guardian review in his new biography, as quoted detikINETmuch of Musk’s success comes from his constant attention to technical details and also that he is a firm believer in “vertical integration”, i.e. making everything himself, not outsourcing it.
So Tesla, for example, chose to make all its own software. Musk also believes that there should be no barriers between design and manufacturing, where the designer’s desk should be physically close to the production line.
However, there is a dark side to Elon Musk which is discussed quite a lot in his biography. As a fanatical hard worker, he doesn’t care about employees’ work-life balance. He believes that if people want to prioritize comfort and free time, they should leave their jobs.
He emailed his employees to remind them that “a crazy sense of urgency is our operating principle.” Isaacson’s study of Musk’s management style included fickle decision making, and a sociopathic indifference to other people’s feelings.
As one of his old university friends said: You can either work with him or be his friend, but not both. He is a figure who lacks empathy.
Musk’s demanding nature at work is no secret as he openly encourages employees to show dedication by sleeping in the office, working long hours, and completely immersing themselves in their work. He himself once said that he likes sleeping in the office.
But it cannot be denied, this trait is also what made him reach the peak of glory. “Some of his employees also see him as an inspirational figure. This is possible because his goals and aspirations are very ambitious and bold (and sometimes very strange),” wrote the Guardian.
“Or perhaps it had something to do with the fact that in a crisis, he himself would throw himself in wholeheartedly. During the initial Tesla Model 3 production crisis, for example, it is said that he fell asleep on the production line for several weeks. (Which makes him the strangest billionaire ever) ” added the Guardian in its review.
