The Danish government announced that it has tightened border controls to enhance internal security and prevent unwanted individuals from entering the country, after the recent incidents of burning the Holy Qur’an, following a similar decision taken by Sweden last week.
The authorities fear reprisals after people in Denmark and Sweden burned and tore several copies of the Noble Qur’an in the past few months, which sparked outrage in the Islamic world and prompted demands for the governments of the two countries to ban such acts.
“The authorities have concluded that it is necessary – for the time being – to focus more on who enters Denmark, in order to counter the current identified threats,” the Danish Ministry of Justice said in a statement.
Police said passengers arriving at Copenhagen airport, even from within Europe’s free-flowing Schengen area, would face more scrutiny in the form of random checks. Accordingly, travelers arriving by train or car from Sweden should expect more checks, while Denmark’s southern border with Germany will see an increase in patrols.
And a group of the far-right in Denmark burned at least ten copies of the Holy Qur’an during the last period, and said that it plans to burn more later.
The Danish and Swedish governments condemned these actions, and are studying new laws that could prevent them, and the tightening of border controls in Denmark will continue in principle until the tenth of August.
Justice Minister Peter Hommelgaard said in a statement, “Recent incidents of burning the Qur’an have affected the current security situation, as the police said,” while Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told the public broadcaster, “It is not permissible to burn religious texts, from It is wrong for someone to stand there and burn the Bible.”
