Undercooked meat can play a trick on you.
Tatyana Gennadievna Maerenkova, a therapist at the Fomin Clinic, told Health Mail.ru about the dangers of eating underdone meat.
It’s about toxoplasmosis. The disease is caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The main route of infection is eating undercooked or undercooked meat. It can be steaks with a low degree of roasting, stroganina, tartare and other dishes from raw and undercooked meat.
Toxoplasmosis can also be picked up through direct or indirect contact with cat feces (for example, when cleaning a tray) or become infected with it in utero (from mother to child). Toxoplasmosis is dangerous for people over 65, children, HIV-infected people, infants and unborn children.
The disease manifests itself in various forms: acute toxoplasmosis (it proceeds as infectious mononucleosis), ocular, CNS (central nervous system), disseminated infection. But the most unfavorable prognosis for congenital toxoplasmosis is when a woman had an acute infection during pregnancy and passed it through the placenta to her baby. And then, if this pregnancy can be saved.
Most adult, healthy, non-pregnant people get toxoplasmosis without symptoms. Only some people, a few days after infection, may develop symptoms similar to SARS, which go away on their own without treatment in two to three days. Symptoms can be as follows: fever up to 38 ° C, chills, excessive sweating.
Approximately 20-30% of people have slightly enlarged lymph nodes – this symptom persists for 2-3 weeks.
To prevent toxoplasmosis, it is recommended that you eat only well-cooked meat and wash your hands thoroughly after contact with raw meat, soil, or cat litter. Pregnant women are advised to avoid contact with cats and cleaning cat litter boxes.
