The Dangers of Syphilis in Pregnancy: Important Screening and Treatment Information

Jakarta

Recently, viral on Tiktok was the story of a young woman who had syphilis while pregnant. The video was uploaded by obgyn specialist Dr. Amira, SpOG, who practices daily at Fakfak Hospital, West Papua.

“My patient is a 17-year-old Miss, 7 months pregnant and in a condition of reactive syphilis. The patient has often changed partners since the first time she had sex in grade 1 junior high school at the age of 13, from several men whose health status was unknown, that was the main trigger sexually transmitted diseases,” explained Dr. Amira, when interviewed by AFP on Thursday (3/8/2023).

“Especially during pregnancy, the danger is not only for the mother but also for the baby. Therefore it is very important that all pregnant women must carry out a free triple elimination early pregnancy screening at all health centers in Indonesia. Syphilis, HIV, HBsAG, if there is a positive result, it can be treated immediately in order to avoid transmission or transmission to infants,” he continued.

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection that is transmitted through unprotected sex. The main cause of this condition is the treponema pallidum bacterium, which can be transmitted through vaginal fluids, sperm, anus, and blood.

Someone infected with syphilis should get intensive treatment. If not treated immediately, it can cause disturbances in the nervous system and threaten the life of the sufferer. In addition to having an impact on the mother, syphilis can also pose a serious risk to the unborn baby.

“Pregnant women, if syphilis is not treated during pregnancy, it can progress to the next phase which is more dangerous, for the mother herself it can attack the nerves of the brain which can cause disturbances in the nerves, convulsions and death,” explained Dr. Amira.

“Babies also get the impact of syphilis, such as congenital abnormalities or defects, cataracts in infants until the baby dies both in the womb and at birth,” he continued.

Generally, syphilis symptoms vary in some patients. Many of those infected with syphilis do not show any symptoms, only blood tests show results that are reactive to the infection.

However, in some people, symptoms of syphilis can appear, such as rashes, reddish skin all over the body, and sores in the vaginal or penis area, which can eventually cause itching around the wound.

Syphilis survivors can also experience relapses.

“If it’s healed, just stop unsafe sexual behavior, because it can happen again,” concluded Dr. Amira.
