The Dangers of Social Media for Young Football Players: Freiburg Coach Christian Streich’s Insights

Freiburg (dpa) – In view of the criticism of the young Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu (21), coach Christian Streich has drawn attention to the dangers and downsides of social media. “You can’t say to a 20-year-old, turn everything off now – they grew up with their mother’s milk, so to speak, with social media. You’re tearing a piece out of them,” said the SC coach (58). Freiburg before the game in the Bundesliga on Sunday (5.30 p.m./DAZN) against FC Augsburg.

“It’s about social contacts, connections, circles of friends, there’s a lot going on on social media,” Streich explained: “But then of course you have to endure the fact that as a Bundesliga player, once you’ve scored a few goals, even though you… “You can’t help it, you also have to listen to bad things. And if your skin color is a little browner than someone else’s, it doesn’t get any better. That’s the reality we live in,” says Streich: “The Boys have to learn to deal with things like that, even if it’s hard and disgusting.”

The 21-year-old Atubolu has been Baden’s new number one this season and is playing his first season in the first division as a regular player. After Mark Flekken said goodbye, the Freiburg team decided on Atubolu as their regular starter early on. Streich supported Atubolu even after more unfortunate scenes. Most recently, the sports club played in a 0-0 draw in Frankfurt for the second time in the Bundesliga with Atubolu keeping a clean sheet.
