Is eating lentil soup safe for kidney patients?

In this regard, Dr. Marwa Ibrahim, a clinical nutritionist, warned kidney patients against eating lentil soup, because it contains nutritional elements that negatively affect their health.

Marwa added that lentil soup poses a great danger to kidney stone patients and people at risk of developing it, due to its high oxalate content.

The clinical nutritionist explained that oxalates are a type of salt, adding: “If their levels increase in the body, the risk of developing kidney stones increases.”

She pointed out the danger of lentil soup for patients with kidney failure as well, because it contains a high percentage of vegetable protein, which makes it difficult for their kidneys to expel the excess from the body through urine.

Marwa revealed that the safe dose of proteins for kidney failure patients is 0.8 grams per kilo of their weight, explaining that lentils contain 42 grams of protein per 100 grams.
