The Dangers of Holding in Your Sneeze: Why Suppressing a Sneeze Can Be Harmful

You do it as inconspicuously as possible in your elbow, or keep your nose and mouth tightly closed, because yes .. it feels a bit embarrassing to sneeze in front of others. But beware, holding in your sneeze is more dangerous than you think.

Whether it’s in a quiet library, during an important meeting, or while trying to impress your date, suppressing a sneeze can be challenging. But from now on you will never do that again.

Air pressure

The sneeze is a reflex, which is caused by a stimulus in the nose. For example, due to snot or an allergy. This clears the airway. According to ENT doctor Jan van der Borden, it is therefore not wise not to hold back, he shares with Fidelity: ““The body blows everything clean by sneezing. When you hold in a sneeze by closing your nose and mouth, the air pressure has nowhere to go. As a result, you run the risk of blowing out a weak spot in your skull, for example between the nose and the eye socket. No major studies have been done, but it is known that people who held in their sneeze got a brain hemorrhage or went blind.”

Sneezing is especially annoying when you have an allergic reaction that lasts for a long time, due to house dust mites or hay fever. “You can then rinse your mucous membrane clean with a special saline solution, so that the stimulus disappears,” says the ENT specialist.

‘Don’t be ashamed of your sneeze’

Van der Borden recommends sneezing into the crease of your elbow. “Preferably not in your hands, because then there are viruses and bacteria on them and you pass them on when you shake someone’s hand. You also dampen the sound in the crook of your elbow.” Although you don’t have to worry so much about the decibels you produce, says the ENT doctor. “Don’t be ashamed of a sneeze, you can’t help it. It is not difficult but useful.”
