More and more people are choosing an electric car. It is more durable than a petrol car, but the impact in a car fire is much greater. This also applies to the electric car that caught fire in Etten-Leur on Monday morning. The fire brigade decided to place the car in an immersion container after extinguishing the fire. “The battery in the car can cause problems,” said Johan Braspening from the fire brigade.
“The battery of an electric car is difficult to discharge.”
Arnoud Hendrickx is a recovery specialist at Van Eijck and he often sees this happen. “I see an electric car fire several times a week. The battery is particularly difficult to remove because you can’t get to it easily,” he explains. “As a precaution, an electric car like this is almost always placed in a submerged container. We don’t put water in the bucket just yet.”
Before Van Eijck takes the car into the container, the fire brigade takes another measure. If the car is still too hot, the fire brigade drives behind the recovery vehicle so that they can intervene if a fire breaks out on the way. A car like this then stays in the container on the Van Eijck site for an average of three days.
“Only when the car starts to smoke do we fill the container with water to cool it down. That doesn’t always happen. ,” Hendrickx explained the method.
“The damage is great, the insurance comes in three days.”
During the Monday fire in Etten-Leur, the car battery did not cause many problems so far, the fire department said. The car is still in the container at the Van Eijck site. It will be clear in the coming days whether it is necessary to fill the container with water after all.
In three days the insurance company will investigate the cause of the fire. According to Hendrickx, this is essential. “Because the damage is great,” he concludes.
