The Dangers of Dry Scooping Your Pre-Workout: Why You Should Stop

If you’re on TikTok, you’ve probably seen videos about dry scooping your pre-workout. Instead of mixing pre-workout with water, toss the powder in your mouth and swallow. We are now going to tell you why you should stop dry-scooping.

This is why you should stop dry scooping your pre-workout

“People have been dry scooping powdered pre-workout supplements for quite some time now, but the popularity increased after trending videos on TikTok,” says Kim Yawitz, dietitian and owner of Two Six Fitness. It’s easy to assume dry shoveling is safe since you’re eating something fit for human consumption.
But pre-workout dry shoveling can be dangerous, according to it National Capital Poison Center.

Mixing pre-workout with water slows the release of caffeine, sugar, amino acids, electrolytes and other substances into the cells. So if you dry-scoop your pre-workout, the ingredients are absorbed much faster,” says Yawitz. “That may seem useful if you’re about to do a tough workout, but the potential downsides are much greater.”

What are the dangers of dry scooping?

Dry scooping pre-workout is a risk to your health for several reasons. First of all, it is important that you take a safe pre-workout. In this article we explain how to recognize a safe pre-workout supplement. Even if your pre-workout has been tested and found to be safe, that doesn’t mean it’s healthy to dry-scoop.

Powders pose a greater choking hazard compared to liquids. Dry scooping is equally gross, but seems to sound better than gulping down half a liter of water mixed with pre-workout. “Still, this isn’t an option, because dry scooping can lead to asthma flares and aspiration pneumonia, or breathing problems,” says Yawitz.

As far as caffeine is concerned: pre-workout contains quite a few cups of coffee. And with dry scooping you can tap it back in seconds. “This can lead to uncomfortable side effects, such as shakiness, fast heart rate, anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and palpitations,” says Yawitz. Simply put, “There’s a reason the directions on pre-workout labels say to mix the product with water.” Following the directions on the supplement labels will keep your consumption safe.”
