The Dangers of Consuming Soybean Oil: Increased Risk of Colitis and Other Health Problems

In what is unpleasant news for those who depend on oils in their food, a recent study revealed that cooking oil, which is commonly used in many countries and societies, can destroy the intestines and cause colitis.

The study, conducted on rats at the University of California, found that diets rich in soybean oil increased the incidence of gut health risks.

The Riverside researchers examined the intestines of mice that had been continuously fed a diet rich in soybean oil for up to 24 weeks in the laboratory.

They found that beneficial bacteria decreased, while harmful bacteria increased (specifically, adherent invasive E. coli), conditions that can lead to colitis.

“Our work challenges the decades-old thinking that many chronic diseases stem from consumption of excess saturated fats from animal products,” said Poonamjot Deol, Associate Professional Research Associate in the Department of Microbiology and Plant Pathology and co-author of the study.

Deol explained that the linoleic acid in soybean oil is the main factor, explaining that “while our bodies need 1-2% of linoleic acid, Americans today get 8-10% of their energy from linoleic acid daily, mostly from soybean oil.” Emphasizing that “excessive linoleic acid negatively affects the gut microbiome.”

Gut – expressive

The dangers of soybean oil

Deol and her colleagues found that a diet rich in soybean oil encourages the growth of adherent E. coli in the gut, as these bacteria use linoleic acid as a carbon source to meet their nutritional requirements.

Moreover, many of the beneficial bacteria in the gut are unable to tolerate linoleic acid and die, leading to the growth of harmful bacteria. Invasive adherent E. coli has been identified in humans as a causative agent of inflammatory bowel disease.

“It is the process of dying good bacteria and growing harmful bacteria that makes the intestines more vulnerable to infections and their effects (…) Moreover, linoleic acid causes the intestinal epithelial barrier to become porous,” Deol explained.

She noted that the function of the intestinal epithelial barrier is critical to maintaining a healthy gut. When disrupted, it can lead to increased permeability or leakage, as toxins can then leak out of the intestines and enter the bloodstream, greatly increasing the risk of infection and chronic inflammatory conditions, such as colitis.

Alzheimer’s – expressive

Obesity, Diabetes and Alzheimer’s

High consumption of soybean oil has been linked to many health problems, including obesity, diabetes, possible autism, Alzheimer’s disease, anxiety and depression, while recent research has added ulcerative colitis to this growing list.

Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) characterized by chronic inflammation of the large intestine.

Soybean oil is the most commonly used edible oil in the United States, and is increasingly being used in other countries, notably Brazil, China, and India.
