It looks sweet, a necklace for your baby. Large beads or a subtle gold thread around the neck. Can it be dangerous or is it an innocent piece of jewelry?
Amber necklaces are certainly popular among young children. Amber is sometimes used in baby jewelry, such as necklaces or bracelets, with claims that it can provide relief from teething. The idea behind this is that amber contains succinic acids that are released upon contact with the heat of the skin and may have a calming effect. However, there is no scientific evidence that amber has a positive effect on health.
Is a chain dangerous for a baby?
There is an official warning in the Netherlands, also regarding these chains. Do not do it. Necklaces can be a choking hazard if they are too tight around a baby’s neck. Babies may try to pull, chew, or become entangled in the chain, which could cause serious injury or suffocation.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has investigated the safety of chains. The NVWA states that the chains can pose a danger to babies during use. Especially those beads that can come loose can be a danger. Babies can choke on small parts like this. A thin gold chain can also be dangerous, because it may get too tight around the neck if you are not paying attention or when your child is sleeping. It is better to opt for a bracelet, especially until your child is 3 years old. And don’t forget: some babies may have an allergic reaction to materials in the necklace, such as metals or certain gemstones.
When using jewelry, it is important to never leave the baby unattended, to regularly check for any wear or damage, and to remove the jewelry while sleeping and during situations where the risk of injury increases. So under no circumstances let your child sleep with a chain on.
