The Dangerous Impact of Cluster Bombs: 2021 Statistics and Global Concerns

If nothing has yet been acted, such a decision could constitute a turning point on the Ukrainian military front. Cluster bombs, also called cluster bombs (BASM), are made up of a container, like a shell, containing smaller explosive projectiles, called “submunitions”. The latter are dispersed over a wide area, and are supposed to explode on contact with the targets. According to the UN, they “can fill entire areas in a size equivalent to several football pitches.”

In 2021, these weapons had been used in nine different countries, including Syria, Iraq, Laos and Yemen, and for the whole of the year had caused 59 deaths and 90 injuries, almost exclusively civilians, victims especially unexploded weapons left on the ground, indicated the Observatory of cluster munitions (Cluster Munition Coalition, CMC) in its annual report.
