Taking the birth control pill could cause a reduction in the hypothalamus in women. In fact, Dr. Michael L. Lipton, professor of radiology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (United States) and his team of researchers have shown that taking birth control pills can have health consequences.
To be convinced, they carried out MRIs (set of techniques enabling images to be obtained from nuclear magnetic resonance) on a sample of 50 women. 21 of these women are used to taking oral contraceptives. They then found that women who took birth control pills had a less developed hypothalamus than those who did not. However, this part of the brain plays an essential role in the production of hormones involved in the regulation of mood, appetite, libido, sleep regulation, heart rate, etc.
” There is a
lack of research on the effects of oral contraceptives on this part
small but essential part of the living human brain “explained the
Professor Lipton pointing out that they “validated assessment methods
the volume of the hypothalamus and confirmed, for the first time, that
current use of oral contraceptive pills is associated with
lower hypothalamic volume “
The work of Professor Lipton and his team
were presented today during the annual meeting of the Radiological
Society of North America (RSNA). Obviously, Professor Lipton will have
addressed a very important issue for women. We already knew that the
taking birth control pills could affect your
weight, libido or menstrual cycle.
