The trade association of insurance companies keeps track of the damages that insurers pay to companies and individuals due to, among other things, thunderstorms, hail and floods. This does not include damage to government property such as street lamps and bus shelters.
This year the counter has already risen to more than half a billion euros. This is partly due to the Corrie, Dudley and Eunice storms that raged over our country in January and February.
The amount disbursed for 2021, equal to 465 million euros, is also substantial. That year, among other things, the flood in Limburg caused a lot of misery. There was also a lot of damage from the storm. The amount for 2021 was also significantly higher than the average damage in the years 2007 to 2020 (€ 325 million).
The association fears that the damage will further increase in the coming years. Climate change is accompanied by more extreme weather events. “The spikes of damage are increasing,” said interest group CEO Richard Weurding. If no action is taken, Weurding fears that the amounts will rise further.
