KONTAN.CO.ID – WASHINGTON. The United States (US) broke a one-day record for new coronavirus infections on Thursday (29/10). This happened after Uncle Sam’s country reported more than 91,000 new cases,
According to Reuters calculations, record coronavirus infections in the US have seen hospitalization rates reaching new highs in many states.
The surge in corona virus cases occurred less than a week before the presidential election which will be held on Tuesday (3/11).
Among the regions hardest hit by this latest Covid-19 spike are hotly contested states such as Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin which will play a key role in deciding whether Republican President Donald Trump gets a second term or a challenger from Joe Biden’s Democratic Party becomes the new president.

The coronavirus has also spread rapidly to record levels in several European regions. As a result, France and Germany announced a national lockdown this week.
Previously, the one-day record for coronavirus cases in the US was 84,169 which occurred on 23 October. However, India still holds the record for daily daily infections, which touched 97,894 infections on September 17.
The White House coronavirus task force said Uncle Sam’s country was heading in the wrong direction and warned that this “unrelenting” spread would require aggressive action to curb new infections.
On Thursday, 12 states set a one-day record for new cases. Namely, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio and Oregon.
Apart from new infections, deaths and hospitalizations have also increased. For the third time in October, more than 1,000 people died from the virus in one day on Thursday.

More than 229,000 people have died from Covid-19 in the United States, the highest death toll in the world.
The number of Covid-19 patients hospitalized has increased by more than 50% in October to 46,000, the highest since mid-August.
