Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan accused Azerbaijan of a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Nagorno-Karabakh and said that all Armenians would soon leave Nagorno-Karabakh.
“The flight of Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh continues. Our analysis shows that there will not be any Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh in the coming days. This is an act of ethnic cleansing, which we have warned the international community about for a long time,” Pashinyan said at the government meeting.
On the other hand, the Azerbaijani public is happy about the departure of the Armenians.
After last week’s attack by the Azerbaijani army, the authorities of the Nagorno-Karabakh Armenian Republic, which had existed “de facto” for more than 30 years, effectively capitulated to Baku the next day.
Although Azerbaijan has promised to respect the rights of ethnic Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh, many residents of the disputed region have decided to flee, fearing reprisals from Azerbaijan, as well as taking into account the almost official ideology of hatred against Armenians and Armenia in Azerbaijan for decades.
On Sunday, Azerbaijan unblocked the Lachin Corridor, the only road connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. Hundreds of people cross the border every hour.
According to estimates, the population of Nagorno-Karabakh in 2021 was 120,000.
As of Thursday morning, “65,036 forcibly displaced persons had arrived in Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh,” the Armenian government said.
