The Czechs are tired of working. They flock to early retirement

The latest data from the Czech Statistical Office (CSO) show that in 2019, 29% of new retirees were premature. This is a relatively significant increase, ten years ago, early retirement accounted for only 19% of all old-age pensions.

However, Czechs take part in the money by retiring early. “In December 2019, the monthly amount of early old-age pension averaged 12,261 crowns, ie more than two thousand crowns less than the average amount of regular old-age pension,” points out Markéta Pištorová from the CZSO Development Statistics Department.

The share of early retirees varies significantly by region. While Praguers are not very interested in it (14%), in the Vysočina region every third pensioner goes to early retirement (34%). There is also great interest in the Pardubice, Moravian-Silesian and Olomouc regions (over 30% everywhere).

Men are more likely to retire early. “Of men receiving a retirement pension, 29% have an early retirement age, compared to women, of whom 25% are among old-age pensioners,” says Helena Chodounská, head of the CZSO’s Department of Education, Health Care, Culture and Social Security.

Overall, however, there are more women than men among the recipients of early retirement pensions, which is generally due to the higher number of women in the senior population.

To retire early, it is necessary to complete the insurance period. “The applicant must have received at least the period of insurance set for a regular old-age pension. This has been at least 35 years since 2019. It is also important to take into account that early retirement is permanently reduced and the possibilities of extra income when paying it are until retirement. age limits, “states the Czech Social Security Administration on its website.
