The world-successful jazzman Jiří Mráz died on Thursday, September 16. He was 77 years old. Not many Czechs know his name, but he was very successful in the world. He lived in the United States, where he used the stage name George Mraz.
The world jazzman has left the music world. The death of Jiří Mráz was informed on Facebook by his wife Camilla, who shared a black-and-white photograph with the date of birth and death of her husband. She did not add any comments to the picture.
Their marriage seemed content and full of love. Last Thursday, they managed to celebrate Jiří’s birthday together, on the occasion of which Camilla shared a joint photo accompanied by a red heart.
Jiří Mráz was born in 1944 in Písek, but in 1968 he left for the USA via Germany. It was there that he became famous as George Mraz. For example, he played with the first lady of jazz, Ella Fitzgerald. He has also released seven solo albums.
He came to the Czech Republic again in 1991 and has been returning occasionally ever since. “I’m American, I have an American passport and I don’t particularly miss the Czech way of life. I still travel and I miss fish. I was here for the first time since January 1967 in 1991. I didn’t think that communism would ever fall “I lived in the Panorama Hotel at the time and I saw my old apartment from the window. Prague is beautiful, but there are a lot of beautiful cities in the world,” Mraz told Harmonie magazine in 2010.
