Barcelona considered to have reached its lowest point after being eliminated Bayern Munich of Champions League. Former Barca officials said the club now needed a new project.
Barcelona ended the 2019/2020 season badly. After failing to win the Spanish League after being overtaken by Real Madrid after the term lockdown, Blaugrana humiliated Bayern Munich 2-8 in the Champions League quarter-finals.
This crushing defeat also ensured Barcelona ended the season without a title. They stopped in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals and ran aground in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup.
Former Barcelona Vice President Emili Rousaud has harshly criticized the management and demanded accountability. The man who resigned in April due to clashes with President Josep Maria Bartomeu believes the club needs new plans.
As is known, this is the first time Barcelona have closed the season without a single trophy since 2007/2008. Previously, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique had urged for change.
“I believe that we have hit rock bottom. We have to rethink, the current directors are responsible for taking an important step and providing opportunities for other projects,” Rousaud told Radio Brand.
“Projects that are now proven obsolete, the cycle is over,” he added.
Barcelona management has taken steps to fire so far Quique Setien from the position of coach. Former Barcelona player Ronald Koeman reportedly to be the strongest candidate to fill the position.
Barcelona’s next homework is believed to be player regeneration. Key players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Pique, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba are over 30 years old.
