The Caravaca de la Cruz National Theater Week raises the curtain on its XLI edition this coming Thursday, July 14, with the Greek tragedy ‘Las Supplicantes’, a co-production of the Mérida Classical Theater Festival with a wide cast of actors and actresses headed by María Garralón. The show, which brings together texts from two works of the same title by Euripides and Aeschylus, features the participation of cantaora Celia Romero, who was the winner of the International Festival of Cante de las Minas de La Unión in 2011.
On Friday, July 15, the production ‘Passport’ will arrive, by the Yllana Company, which pays tribute to the lives of artists who cross borders with the ultimate goal of sharing laughter throughout the planet. This play tells the story of four comedians on tour in a country called Komedistan. Hassles at customs to enter the country, language conflict in a restaurant, staying in a disastrous hotel, and before and after a performance sum up the experience of working abroad.
The veteran actor Rafael Álvarez ‘El Brujo’ will arrive on the stage of the Plaza de Toros on Saturday, July 16 with the theatrical version of the classic play ‘El Lazarillo de Tormes’ made by the remembered Fernando Fernán Gómez.
Tribute to Jesús Cimarro and the San Javier Festival
On the night of July 16, and before ‘El Brujo’ performs in front of the public, recognition will be given to the theatrical producer and president of the State Federation of Associations of Theater and Dance Production Companies of Spain, Jesús Cimarro, director also of the Merida Festival. The Festival of Theatre, Music and Dance of San Javier will also be honored, which, born in 1969, reaches its 52nd edition this year.
“Following the tributes that we introduced last year in the Theater Week coinciding with the re-launch of the festival, in this edition we recognize two fundamental assets of the Spanish scene. On the one hand, Jesús Cimarro, one of the great names of the national theater production. On the other hand, a neighboring event that has established itself as one of the great national events of the performing arts: the San Javier International Festival of Theatre, Music and Dance”, said the mayor of Caravaca, José Francisco García, who added that “it is a great pleasure to have them in Caravaca and to have them as a mirror in which to look at ourselves to continue contributing to promoting the best of theater for the benefit of all of society”.
The programming of the Caravaca Theater Week will continue the following week with the musical show ‘Nº1, the Paylist of your life’, which will include a tribute to the singer Mari Trini on the 75th anniversary of her birth, as well as three new works theatrical: ‘My body will be a path’, by the Murcian company Alquibla; ‘The Party Pooper’, with Josema Yuste; and ‘Tartufo’ with Pepe Viyuela.
The program is completed with two children’s shows, one on Sunday July 17, ‘La casita de chocolate’ and on Wednesday 20 ‘The story machine’.
