The “curse” of 4 World Cups… Will Ronaldo break it on Tuesday?

England qualified without too much trouble for the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup, after beating Senegal 3-0 at Al-Bayt Stadium on Sunday.

Despite Senegal’s good start, Jordan Henderson went ahead with a goal for England in the 38th minute, and captain Harry Kane added a goal just before half-time to score for the first time of the current tournament.

The third goal came from Bukayo Saka, who replaced Marcus Rashford in the starting line-up in the 57th minute.

England will have an important appointment in the quarter-finals against France, who beat Poland 3-1 today.

Boulay Dia, the Senegalese striker, came close to scoring when he fired from close range, but goalkeeper Jordan Pickford brilliantly saved his goal half an hour into the game.

Eight minutes later, Judd Bellingham sent in a cross, which Henderson converted from close range, before England imposed control.

Bellingham started a counter-attack which ended with Kane in a solitary position to shoot hard into goalkeeper Edouard Mendy’s net, taking his tally to 52 goals for his country, one goal behind Wayne Rooney, the historic top scorer.

And Saka managed to reach his third goal of the current tournament after receiving a pass from Phil Foden, who set up the second goal for his colleague Kane, from the left and hit a wonderful ball into Edward Mendy’s net.

England thus reached 12 goals in Qatar, equaling their best tally in the 2018 edition in Russia, when they reached the semi-finals. England scored 11 goals in their winning streak at the 1966 World Cup.
