The curfew hits the taxi sector in Castellón

Radio Taxi Castellón was founded in 1984 and in 2011 it decided to merge with Tele Taxi.

In this way they became the only cooperative in the sector that operates in the province of Castellón.

Specifically, its work area covers the municipalities of Castelló, Almassora, Alquerías del Niño Perdido, Benicàssim, Benlloch, Borriol, Burriana, Vilanova d’Alcolea and Vilareal.

In addition, they offer intercity services from any location in the joint service area to anywhere in Spain and even Europe.

The cooperative is one of the few companies in Castellón that has a “Special Employment Center”.

The special objective of these centers is the labor and therefore social integration of people with disabilities. Of the seven switchboard workers, six of them have some kind of disability.

As for the vehicle fleet, it is the largest in Castellón, with cars with different characteristics to provide the best possible service, they have three adapted taxis and some electric and hybrid cars, showing their commitment to the environment.

Currently, the company has 69 partners who mostly drive their own taxis and who have adapted as best they could to the situation generated by Covid-19.

Citizens’ fear is also something they have to deal with, therefore, they clean their vehicles daily to disinfect them, drivers wear a mask and hydroalcoholic gel, and some cars also have a protection screen that acts as a screen between taxi driver and customer.

After the working day and since the company has an ozone machine at its headquarters, they can carry out a more thorough cleaning to give greater security to their customers.

Another measure they take is ventilation, which in recent studies has been presented as essential to prevent infections.

During the first state of alarm decreed, on March 14 of this year, and in the first months of the pandemic, Radio Taxi Castellón played a fundamental role. Among other tasks, the taxi drivers of this cooperative transported doctors and nurses, from hospitals and outpatient clinics, to the homes of the patients in order to carry out home care and follow-up of Covid-19 patients.

Regarding institutional aid, the cooperative stated that “a few months ago we received four or five masks, a bottle of gel and help to put screens from the council, but little else.”

In fact, the taxi drivers union indicated that they were one of the sectors that is suffering the effects and restrictions derived from the pandemic.

With the declaration of the new state of alarm and the curfew, “at night only three or four drivers will circulate and at the moment there will be a teleoperator at the switchboard to derive services.”

From Radio Taxi Castellón they point out that, during all these months, the night shift is the one in which the activity has fallen the most «with services being reduced by 20 percent; while in the morning it has fallen by 30 or 40 percent, and on weekends by 50 percent.

Before the pandemic, 15 drivers provided night service, now only 3 or 4 will do it, to serve the few people who need it: to go to or leave the hospital and / or do something essential.
