Vienna / Berlin (MH) – With the premiere of Leoš Janáček’s “The Cunning Little Fox”, the MusikTheater an der Wien celebrates its debut in its temporary location, Hall E in the MuseumsQuartier, Saturday (today). At the same time, Stefan Herheim – director since the beginning of the season – makes his directorial debut. The French soprano Mélissa Petit can be seen as the intelligent fox and the Slovak mezzo Jana Kurucovà as the fox. Lithuanian conductor Giedrė Šlekytė conducts the Wiener Symphoniker.
The Theater an der Wien – renamed MusikTheater an der Wien by the new director – has been completely renovated. By autumn 2024, the structural substance and services of the building must be completely improved and the front and rear buildings must be renovated.
The costs are estimated at a total of € 60.05 million. Of these, 39 million euros come from the budget of the City of Vienna. For the rest, Wien Holding grants a loan to the United Theaters in Vienna. Built in 1801 by Emanuel Schikaneder, the Theater an der Wien was last renovated from the ground up in 1962. Since then there have been partial renovations and repairs especially in times when there are no games.
